Brief historical background, collections and exhibitions of the museum
The South-Siberian Botanical Garden (SSBG) was opened by order of the Minister of Higher, General and Secondary Special Education of the RSFSR in December 1979, as an independent structural unit of the Altai State University (AltSU). The idea of its creation belongs to Irina Viktorovna Vereshchagina, a senior researcher at the Institute of Horticulture of Siberia. For a long time, she was the curator of the botanical garden and invested a lot of effort and energy into creating the open-ground collections. At the same time, Irina Viktorovna developed the plan for the systematicum.
In addition to Irina Viktorovna, the following individuals were also at the origins of the botanical garden's creation: A.M. Maloletko, L.V. Kryvshenko, T.A. Terekhina.
Since January 1988, the director of the botanical garden has been Alexander Ivanovich Shmakov. In 1990, Alexander Ivanovich successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation "Ferns of Altai, Tien Shan, and Semirechye," and in 2000, his doctoral dissertation on the topic "Ferns of Russia."
Functional parts of the collections and expositions:
- The "systematicum" exposition is a systematic collection. The plants in it are arranged by families (mainly species of Altai flora) in radially located sectors – from monocots in the center to composites closer to the perimeter.
- The "dendrarium" exposition is built on the principle of the habitat of specific tree and shrub species in typical plant communities of Altai.
- The alpine slide features species that suffer from damping-off in the conditions of Barnaul.
- The "shade-tolerant plants" exposition is located under the canopy of a birch-pine forest with the participation of rowan, linden, and spruce.
The garden's collection includes 1587 taxa (962 species, 625 forms and varieties), of which:
- The systematic collection is represented by 350 species (50 monocot species, 300 dicot species);
- 270 species grow on the alpine slide (80 monocots, 190 dicots);
- 160 species are on the shady plot (30 species of vascular spores, 25 monocots, 105 dicots);
- 165 species (25 gymnosperms, 140 seed plants) and 46 varieties are located in the dendrarium;
- The collection of ornamental plants is represented by: daylilies (2 species, 60 varieties), irises (95 varieties), peonies (3 species, 29 varieties), astilbe (2 species, 12 varieties), phloxes (25 varieties), chrysanthemums (3 varieties, 2 forms), delphinium (7 species, 8 varieties), tulips (300 varieties), daffodils (50 varieties), lilies (38 varieties), muscari (3 species, 10 varieties);
- The collections of annuals include 120 cultivar samples from widely cultivated species (tagetes, eschscholzia, etc.);
- Biennials are represented by 200 cultivar samples from 33 families.
The SSBG collections are registered in an introduction journal with phenological tables and in a planting journal.
