Brief historical background, collections and exhibitions of the museum
In July 1995, the administration of the municipal park "Lesnaya Skazka" in the Industrialny District acquired two chickens and two rabbits, which were shown to visitors in a small animal corner. Later, ponies, foxes, corsac foxes, and squirrels appeared in the animal corner. Wooden enclosures were built.
In 2001, yaks settled in the park.
In 2005, the park was reorganized, and the animal corner got a second life. Under the leadership of the new park director, a gradual reconstruction began. The old wooden enclosures were replaced with new, modern structures.
In 2006, an American llama, a camel, silver foxes, and a wolf appeared in the animal corner. In 2007, Czech goats, badgers, and a Himalayan bear were added. In 2008, elite breeds of chickens, Muscovy ducks, and turkeys were introduced.
In 2008–2009, new enclosures for ungulates and predators were built.
In 2010, peacocks, a Far Eastern wildcat, a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig, and a donkey were acquired. New enclosures were built for all these animals.
In July 2010, the decision was made to establish the Barnaul Zoo, and on August 12, 2010, it was officially registered[4].
In the autumn of 2010, pink pelicans, having lost their way, flew to Altai. Now, 4 pelicans are residents of the zoo. Winter and summer enclosures were built for them.
In 2011–2012, mouflon, a Far Eastern leopard, a lion, a coati, and an Amur tiger appeared in the zoo, and in 2013, a Bennett's wallaby (red-necked wallaby) was added.
In 2015, the zoo was enriched with two new families of Javanese macaques and green monkeys.
Today, the zoo is home to Himalayan bears, red wolves, a black Canadian wolf, a gray wolf, Georgian snow foxes, raccoons, kangaroos, badgers, minks, porcupines, coatis, mouflons, wild boars, roe deer, jungle cats, and Far Eastern wildcats. The pink pelicans and pink flamingos have become the zoo's adornment.
The zoo's collection includes 16 very rare animals listed in the Red Book[6].
Rosarium:
In 2018, the first public rosarium in Altai Krai was established on the zoo's territory in collaboration with the Barnaul agricultural firm "Semena Altai," featuring over 15 varieties of roses[6]. All roses are frost-resistant, grafted onto Siberian rosehip, which prevents them from freezing. They bloom from early summer until the end of September[6]. In 2019, as part of the Barnaul Zoo's birthday celebration, "Semena Altai" held a promotion, giving away Siberian-grown roses to all guests.
Interesting Facts:
In the summer of 2012, an unusual inhabitant appeared in one of the cages – a ZAZ-968M car, classified by the zoo staff as a representative of the Zaporozhets genus, species 968M, of the sedan family.
