Brief historical background, collections and exhibitions of the museum
Status: Private museum. Altai Regional Public Organization "Ruslan Dultsev-Detochkin Car Theft Hermitage".
The Ruslan Dultsev-Detochkin Car Theft Museum is one of the most unusual museums in Barnaul. It was founded with the support of the Barnaul Public Rescue Service, which deals with the evacuation of cars involved in accidents. The extensive material from this service became the basis for the exhibition, which opened in 2003. The museum aims to prevent car theft and conduct educational work with young people. Until recently, a similar museum operated in Moscow. However, it is now closed, and the museum in Barnaul is the only one in Russia dedicated to car theft. The museum was named in honor of the famous character played by Innokenty Smoktunovsky in the film "Beware of the Car" directed by Eldar Ryazanov.
The museum's exhibition is divided into two thematic blocks. One part presents devices for breaking into and stealing cars, while the other displays various homemade alarms and other methods to combat criminals.
The first exhibit that visitors encounter is a real Soviet motorcycle with a sidecar. It is 30 years old and painted in its original blue color. Next to it stands a figure of a traffic inspector, easily recognizable as the character played by Georgy Zhzhenov. You can even sit behind the wheel of this legendary vehicle.
In total, the Yuri Detochkin Museum has five halls, which contain over 200 exhibits related to car theft. The museum also has an extensive archive of photos and video materials about car chases and traffic accidents. The walls of the museum are decorated with photographs of vintage cars.
The museum's exhibits will be interesting not only to fans of Soviet cinema but to all car enthusiasts. Here you can see a car door damaged in a real shootout. The driver was wounded in the chase and later convicted. Also on display are various lock picks and makeshift tools for breaking into cars. Perhaps the most unusual item in the exhibition is a plunger. And metal rulers were used exclusively to break into domestic cars. The guide will explain what the criminals needed these items for. But, of course, the full details of their use will not be revealed to visitors, as all items here are real car theft tools. Many exhibits were provided to the museum by law enforcement agencies — fake driver's licenses and insurance policies, counterfeit license plates, electronic code grabbers, and alarm jammers.
Car owners used equally ingenious devices to protect their vehicles from criminals. The exhibition features wheel locks, pedal traps, as well as less drastic devices, such as fishhooks on the driver's seat.
In 2017, an exhibit appeared in the Detochkin Museum that the museum staff had been searching for throughout the Altai Krai for many years. It is the star of the movie, the very same 1958 Volga. The car is fully preserved in its original condition, from the upholstery to the factory parts. The Volga is in working order, and museum staff note that it is very easy to maintain. However, driving it in city traffic is inconvenient, as the gear shift is on the steering wheel. Another rare exhibit in the museum is a Zaporozhets, brought to Barnaul from Novosibirsk. Anyone can sit behind the wheel of these cars.
