Brief historical background, collections and exhibitions of the museum
The museum was founded in 1982 on the initiative of the city's working people. During its operation, the museum has developed into a unique entity and has taken a worthy place in the cultural life of the city. In September 1999, the museum received a permanent residence in the building of the former State Bank, where the Kharkov evacuation hospital was located during the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945.
The museum has 17,172 unique items in its collection related to the region's history, ethnography, and archaeology. The main collection currently includes 14,383 items. The most valuable museum collections in Aleysk are represented by paintings by local artists, numismatics (1,402 items), ethnographic exhibits, and a unique collection of stones and minerals.
The museum's collections reflect the city's history from the first settlements to the present day, tell about the natural resources, the development of the railway, the history of the city's enterprises and institutions, reveal the development of Orthodoxy, and display the unique culture and life of the peoples of Russia: Russians, Germans, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Uzbeks, and others.
