Brief historical background, collections and exhibitions of the museum
The museum was founded in 1959, but the history of an art museum's emergence in Barnaul dates back much further. Pyotr Kozmich Frolov, a renowned scientist, inventor, and head of the Kolyvan-Voskresensk factories in Altai, possessed a unique art collection. It included paintings by many famous Russian and Western European artists, among them several works by Rembrandt. These pieces formed the foundation of the art department's collection at the Altai Local Lore Museum, which was established by Frolov in 1823.
Later, in 1920, an Art Museum was opened in the building of the former Church of Dmitry of Rostov on Spartak Square. Its collection featured works by artists such as K.S. Malevich, V.V. Kandinsky, P.P. Konchalovsky, A.V. Lentulov, A.V. Kuprin, N.P. Krymov, and K.V. Kuznetsov, as well as works by masters of the Russian academic school, the Flemish school, and the schools of Poussin, Rubens, and Van Dyck.
This museum was short-lived and closed in the mid-1920s, with its collection disappearing. By the late 1950s, in connection with the active development of the Virgin Lands, orders were issued by the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR to establish art museums in the Asian part of Russia—in the cities of the Trans-Urals, Siberia, and Altai—to introduce the region's inhabitants to high culture and the masterpieces of Russian and Soviet art. The Art Museum in Barnaul was opened on March 6, 1959.
The museum's collection was formed based on works from the art department of the Local Lore Museum, primarily featuring pieces by Barnaul artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries, such as Avilov, Konchalovsky, and Osmerkin. Additionally, the museum's holdings were supplemented by works from major art exhibitions and private collections, as well as from the Russian Museum, the Hermitage, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Historical Museum, the Research Museum of the USSR Academy of Arts, and the Pavlovsk Palace-Museum.
Since 2003, the Art Museum has been the organizer of the "Youth Palette" festival.
Since 2012, the museum has been undergoing restoration, which is still not complete. The museum building on Oktyabrya Square is closed. The museum has temporarily relocated to the building at 16 Maxim Gorky Street.
The museum holds over 13,000 works representing the main types and genres of fine art. The collection consists of sections of Orthodox art from the 16th–20th centuries, Russian art from the 18th–20th centuries, professional and folk art of Siberia and Altai from the late 18th–21st centuries, as well as small sections of ancient and Western European art.
The most extensive collection is that of works by professional Altai artists. It includes the creative heritage of the first artists of Altai: G.I. Gurkin, A.O. Nikulin, and A.N. Borisov, as well as members of the 1920s association "Altai Art Society." The most significant part of the Altai professional art collection is comprised of works by artists from the second half of the 20th century: G.F. Borunov, M.Ya. Budkeev, A.G. Vagin, V.A. Zoteev, N.P. Ivanov, M.D. Kocheshnikova, Yu.N. Panin, V.F. Rublev, F.A. Filonov, A.P. Friesen, L.R. Tsesyulevich, S.I. Chernov, and A.A. Yugatkin.
