Brief historical background, collections and exhibitions of the museum
The museum was established in 1966 as a school museum on the initiative of Kray Adarovich Bidinov, a teacher of the Altai language and literature. In the early 1980s, the museum was given a separate building and consisted of several departments reflecting the material and spiritual culture of the Telengits of the Kosh-Agachsky District in the Chui Steppe.
In 2008, the museum moved into a new building specially constructed by the administration of the "Kosh-Agachsky District" municipal entity.
To preserve, study, and popularize the cultural and historical heritage of the Telengits living in the "Kosh-Agachsky District" municipal entity, and in connection with the 150th anniversary of the Chui volosts' Telengits joining the Russian state, the museum was granted the status of a branch of the Anokhin National Museum of the Altai Republic by Decree No. 498-r of the Government of the Altai Republic on October 3, 2016.
The exhibits in the archaeology department have attracted scientists since the museum's creation. Researchers from Barnaul, Novosibirsk, Moscow, and abroad come here to study the runic scripts, rock carvings, ancient Turkic statues, Buddhist sutras, etc., that are kept in the museum. One of the most valuable exhibits is a mummified skull, a hand, and a composite Hunnic bow of a warrior from the Hun-Sarmatian period (2nd century BC – 4th century AD) in the history of Gorny Altai. The museum also has collections of clothing and household items, and a photographic and documentary fund of veterans of the Great Patriotic War and famous people of the district.
