Brief historical background, collections and exhibitions of the museum
The history of the local history museum is inseparably linked to the name of the honorary citizen of Novoaltaysk, recipient of the Lenin Order, Vasily Yakovlevich Marusin.
On February 2, 1971, the executive committee of the city council decided to create a local history museum in Novoaltaysk. The initiator of the museum's creation, Vasily Yakovlevich Marusin, was confirmed as its chairman. The museum council was also established, and on May 8, 1972, on the 30th anniversary of Novoaltaysk, the city local history museum was finally opened in front of a large crowd. Collective events, meetings of veterans with schoolchildren aimed at patriotic education of the younger generation, interesting exhibitions, lectures, and excursions were organized here. The museum was visited by guests from China, Mongolia, Japan, Finland, Poland, etc.
From its opening until 1980, the museum operated on a voluntary basis.
In 1980, the Ministry of Culture of the RSFSR awarded the status of "PEOPLE'S" to the Novoaltaysk Local History Museum.
In 1982, the museum "settled" in the center of the city in more spacious facilities located at 7 XXII Party Congress St., where it seemed to find a permanent place. But time progresses, and new tasks arise for the museum: how to better and more fully show the city’s and region’s history to its residents, and where to place an interesting exhibition.
Since 1988, the museum has been a branch of the Altai Local History Museum named after I. I. Polzunov, and since 1995 – the Novoaltaysk Municipal Local History Museum.
Thus, in 2000, by the order of the Head of the City A. N. Yanin, the municipal local history museum was allocated a spacious room on the first floor of a five-story brick building at 9 XXII Party Congress St. After six months of reconstruction and installation of exhibitions, on April 16, 2001, the municipal local history museum reopened its doors to visitors. The exhibitions are updated, and residents bring many new interesting exhibits here. Interesting traveling exhibitions are also held, etc.
By the resolution of the Altai Regional Council of People's Deputies of June 2, 2003, the museum was named after V. Ya. Marusin.
Excursions and thematic lectures are held in four exhibition halls of the museum.
The first hall tells about the founders of the museum who are in its council and shows the modern history of the city's development.
The second hall presents a collection of inhabitants of the natural ecosystem of Novoaltaysk, which includes several dozen animals and birds. In this hall, one can see archaeological monuments: a collection of remains of prehistoric animals that lived in the region, as well as items from burials related to the Andronovo, Scythian, and Turkic periods in history. A special place in the hall occupies a model of the fortress on Beliy Yar, built under the leadership of Ivan Makyukov in 1717.
The third hall features an exhibition of exhibits telling about the life of peasants during the late 19th – early 20th century. In this hall, one can learn about rituals and traditions associated with the Russian village, understand its layout, get acquainted with the Russian stove, and see how a weaving loom, which used to be in every home, is arranged. There are also elements of peasant life: clay dishes, products made of birch bark, as well as washbasins, towels, and much more.
The exhibitions of the fourth hall are united under the common name "The 20th Century is Leaving". A special interest is represented by part of the exhibition devoted to the Great Patriotic War in the life of the city, the exhibition "The Life of a Person in the Soviet Country" (elements of daily life and the interior of people's lives during the Soviet period) and a collection of stones and minerals collected by the museum founder Vasily Yakovlevich Marusin.
