Brief historical background, collections and exhibitions of the museum
Currently, the municipal budgetary institution of the city of Barnaul, "Museum "City," is one of the youngest museums in Barnaul. In September 2022, the museum celebrated its 15th anniversary. Despite its youth, the museum has an interesting history, rich collections, and its own unique, established traditions.
The idea of creating a museum to study, preserve, and showcase the history, development, and present state of Barnaul was first conceived in 2000. At that time, the city manager V.N. Bavarin signed a decree "On the creation of a municipal museum of the city of Barnaul." Initially, the collections were formed based on the branch library No. 18 of the City Center for Information, Education, and Leisure.
The official date for obtaining the state registration number was May 2, 2007. This coincides with the museum's relocation from the library building to newly renovated premises.
The foundation of the future museum's collections included documents from local self-government bodies, the culture committee, the city administration, archival materials, photo documents, and material culture items.
Currently, the main fund of the museum contains over 5,000 storage units. A significant number of items have been donated to the museum by the residents of Barnaul. The value of these items not only lies in their capacity to represent and witness historical processes as a whole but also in their direct connection to life in Barnaul.
Permanent exhibitions: Currently, the "City" museum has 4 stationary exhibitions – "Barnaul. From Origins to Present," "Barnaul of the 19th – early 20th centuries," "Barnaul of the 20th – early 21st centuries," "Sky for All."
